Stephan Spencer on NBC TV Albuquerque - "Geek to Chic"

This is a clip of Stephan’s interview about Geek to Chic on NBC TV Albuquerque.

Alright, do you own a drone? Or do you have more than 50 apps on your phone? Or wear a superhero costume? Well, if you do, then you might be a geek, and we think that's okay. We say geeks are cool. Here with more is the host of the top rated iTunes new and noteworthy podcast, Get Yourself Optimized, and he's the author of Geek Revolution. Joining me now is Stephan Spencer. Good morning. Thanks so much for joining us.

Tom Hanks is so into space. He's the ultimate space geek. Rosario Dawson is a Trekkie, a Star Trek geek. And Leonardo DiCaprio is a Star Wars geek who had so many Star Wars collectibles he had to donate them to charity. They were taking up so much space in his house.

Oh, wow. People are proud to be geeks these days. In fact, 87% of the general population say they do not sneak their geek. Meaning they're not hiding potentially embarrassing secrets.

Yeah, it's no longer embarrassing. It's kind of cool to be, you know, part of a community, too, the camaraderie.

Exactly. It's never been cooler, in fact, to be a geek, and it's getting cooler every day.

Gotcha. Okay, so are you transforming me into? I mean, I feel like I am a geek, really, but are you transforming me?

Well, let's find out.

Okay.

Okay, so let's take the geek quiz and find out if you're a geek. All right, go ahead. Okay, question number one. Like Leonardo DiCaprio, do you take pride in your geek toys?

I'm going to say no, I don't have any geek toys that I can think of off the top of my head.

So question two, do you have more than 50 apps installed on your phone? That would make you a tech geek.

I don't think I have more than 50, and I'm out of space. That's one of my problems.

Okay. Question three: Do you own a drone?

No.

Okay. Question four: Is your movie, music, video game, book, or comic book collection a source of pride?

No. Okay. I'm a terrible geek. I want to be a geek.

No, that's fine, that's fine. Question five: Now, this is a good question. Have you ever worn character clothing, except for on Halloween, including pajamas?

Except for Halloween? I did for Star Wars.

Okay, there you go.

It was work-related, but yeah, I'm going to embrace that geek. Okay.

Excellent. Okay. Okay. Question six. Have you ever been to ComicCon, VidCon, or WonderCon?

No. I would gladly go, though. Totally sure. I mean, who doesn't wanna go to San Diego? ComicCon.

Okay. Last question. Okay. Okay. Have you ever taught yourself an artificial language like Klingon or Elvis?

No. I don't even know what you're saying right now. No, I have not.

Okay. Well, you know what? If you answered yes to one of the questions, which you did, you're possibly a geek. Two questions, yes, and you're probably a geek. Three or more questions, and you're definitely a geek.

Definitely a geek. Okay. Your book, The Geek Revolution, when people pick it up, what can they expect from your book?

Right. It's all about optimizing your inner geek. Okay. Right? So, for example, step one would be to be grateful. Harville Hendricks, on my podcast, Get Yourself Optimized, said the most important thing for your relationship is to express three things that you appreciate about your significant other every single day. He's been doing it for the last 18 years and hasn't missed a day yet.

Every day he says that?

Every day. And I have been doing it for the last two months with my fiancee. It's already had a huge impact.

Okay.

So, the next step is to establish habits. Positive habits, like being grateful, like doing yoga practice, and meditating. Right, positive habits, when you establish them and keep them, are a great way to optimize your inner geek.

Okay.

Okay, the next one.

Last but not least, yeah.

Okay, so examine everything. Examine your thoughts. Byron Katie told me to question every one of your thoughts because oftentimes your thoughts aren't even true. So, that kind of critical thinking is a great way to optimize your inner geek. Okay

Listen, we're about out of time. You have really gone from geek to chic. If we can, you know, pull up your before and after photo, it's a huge difference there. You look younger.

You're still a geek at heart. The podcast is available. It is online at getyourselfoptimized.com or stephanspencer.com for more information. Can I hear, can I put some of this gear on now, just while we're out of here?Yeah. Great. So this is the Muse Meditation Helper.

This way?

Nope, the other way. The other way.

I'm a terrible geek. Here we go.

Alright, this is the Z sleep. Thank you so much for your time.

Come back and see us, my friend. Thank you.
