Sometimes we in the search community get drawn into playful SEO contests where we compete with each other to rank for some nonsense phrase like “nigritude ultramarine.” That’s all fine and good, but it’s merely ego stroking. It doesn’t make the world a better place. What could we SEOs do for the greater good? One idea is we could help the Tibetans by raising awareness of their plight. And now would be an opportune time to do it, considering that the Olympics are right around the corner. As outlined in the SEOs for Tibet post on Changes For Good, the idea in a nutshell is to get SEOs to join forces and send a bunch of “link love” to a Tibet-related site like FreeTibet.org, in order to boost its rank in Google for “olympics” — thus raising awareness and perhaps spurring on demonstrations at the Olympics by attendees. For optimal results, the Tibet-related site would need to concurrently implement some on-page SEO as well and adopt “olympics” as a keyword theme on their home page.
An interesting idea? Does it have legs?
Though a noble idea, the word Olympics is protected by trademark. It is policed like any other brand. They would simply be creating more legal work for the IOC and various other Olympic committees.
I personally don’t believe the Olympics is the platform for political bullying. Opportunists who otherwise have little opinion or stake in the relations between Tibet and China are the ones who bother me most.
Leave the games alone folks.
I like the idea, even its great.. If i can give half an hour then we can raise the sites presence in olympics environment.. Tell me if you are building teams or some task, I am ready to serve.
Nice idea – just take another keyword for it, like Jason mentioned 😉
I´ve started 2 years ago a non-commercial german Free Tibet Blog (http://www.free-tibet.info) as a kind of “charity seo project” … it works very good & gives me the chance for raising awareness and pointing to the important facts in the China-Tibet conflict.
The Blog is listed with sitelinks on 1 on google.de for “free tibet” and has many other important phrases in the Google.de Top-5.
The blog has got tons of visitors, after the rumours in Lhasa started this year, which gave me the chance to “work on the public opinion” and push many other for Tibet relevant german projects with backlinks & traffic … would be nice to see some links from SEOs in the USA, pointing to this domain in the future 😉
Sorry for my lousy school english … ONE WORLD, ONE DREAM: FREE TIBET!
